Understanding Gum Disease

Home | Dentist Syracuse Utah | Page 30

Did you know, many people suffer from gum disease and don’t know they have it, until sever damage occurs? Gum disease is an infection that targets your gum tissue that supports your teeth. In most cases, gum disease is painless and hard to detect at first. That is why keeping regular dental appointments are necessary so your dentist can detect gum disease and reverse it before serious damage like tooth loss, or bone deterioration occurs.

Understanding the warning signs of gum disease could help you detect if you have gum disease. Warning signs of gum disease include:

• persistent bad breath or bad taste
• gums that bleed easily
• red, swollen, or tender gums
• gums that pull away from the teeth
• loose teeth

The good news about gum disease is it can easily be reversed and prevented with proper habits. These habits include keeping up with your brushing and flossing habits regularly. This will help keep plaque and bacteria away from your gums so your smile stays clean. Checking in with your dentist regularly will also have a huge effect on fighting away gum disease.

If you have any of these signs or symptoms of gum disease, please contact your dentist right away. Your dentist can address or answer any questions or concerns you have pertaining to your oral care. So, call us today and schedule an appointment. Let us give you a healthy smile you can truly love this holiday season.

Have you ever had a canker sore? If you have, you know how annoying they can be. Typically—despite canker sores being fairly small—they can be quite painful. Unlike cold sores, canker sores always appear inside of the mouth, either on your lips, your tongue, or the side of your mouth and are not contagious.

Sadly, no one knows exactly what causes these annoying sore and there is no way to treat them. Fortunately, they should heal on their own after a few days, but wouldn’t it be better if you could avoid the experience entirely? Luckily, even though we may not know the cause of canker sores, we do know a few ways you can avoid them.

For example, some fruits and vegetables can irritate your mouth and leave you with a painful sore. This is particularly true of citrus fruits. Similarly, you could develop a canker sore if you bite your gums or tongue.

Similarly, to protect your smile from these annoying sores, we recommend maintaining sound oral health. Another thing you can do is avoid brushing with the wrong type of toothbrush. We recommend using a soft-bristled brush. This type of toothbrush will remove plaque and tartar efficiently without aggravating your gums.

If you have any other questions about what you can do to protect your smile from canker sores, please feel free to contact us soon. We’re excited to hear from you.

Food helps to keep both your body and teeth healthy. Though many foods strengthen and rebuild tooth enamel, some have the opposite effect. Here are ten foods and drinks you should avoid if you want to keep your teeth healthy.

  1. Sticky Foods: Sticky foods like candies and dried fruits can linger on teeth, which gives plaque bacteria plenty of sugar to create acids from for a longer period of time.
  2. Potato Chips: Chips and other foods that crunch are high in starches which tend to get trapped in your teeth.
  3. Soda: This is high in both sugar and acid. Additionally, colored sodas can stain your teeth if you drink them frequently.
  4. Hard Candies: These contain a lot of sugar, increasing the risk for tooth decay. Since they are hard, they may also chip or break a tooth.
  5. Coffee: This drink can stain teeth, has added sugars, and contains caffeine that dries out the mouth (increasing your risk for tooth decay).
  6. Sour Candy: Like sodas, this is high in both sugar and acids that can harm your smile.
  7. Sports Drinks: The main ingredient of most sports drinks is sugar.
  8. Citrus Fruits/Drinks: These are high in acids which erode tooth enamel and irritate mouth sores.
  9. Ice: Chewing on ice can cause your teeth to chip or crack.
  10. Alcohol: Drinking this substance dries out the mouth, can reduce saliva flow over time, and increases your risk for oral cancer.
