About Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth, which are also referred to as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in your mouth. Most people have four wisdom teeth, which usually come in during the late teen years or early twenties. Wisdom teeth grow in at the back of the mouth. While most individuals have wisdom teeth, there is the possibility that someone may not have wisdom teeth or will have less than four wisdom teeth. Oftentimes, wisdom teeth must be removed from the mouth due the complications that they cause.
What Complications Can Wisdom Teeth Cause?
Because they are the last teeth to come in, there is typically not enough space left in your mouth for the wisdom teeth to grow in properly. In these cases, the wisdom teeth can cause several complications, including:
- Damage to the neighboring teeth
- Infection, especially in the gum tissues
- Formation of cysts
- Impacted wisdom teeth, where the teeth are trapped in the bone and gum tissues, unable to fully erupt
- Periodontal disease
- Disruption to the natural alignment of the teeth or orthodontic treatment
If after a consultation it is found you have one of these complications, your dentist will probably recommend the removal of the wisdom teeth. We provide wisdom teeth removal for impacted teeth, as well as for wisdom teeth that have already come in. Our dentists can provide this service in our friendly office, and we will make certain that you are comfortable throughout the entire process.
What Is The Process For Getting Wisdom Teeth Removed?
The process for getting your wisdom teeth removed is not overly complicated. You will have a consultation before your scheduled removal appointment in order to find out whether you have wisdom teeth and if they will need to be removed. Once it has been determined that your wisdom teeth will need to be removed, you will talk with the dentist and oral surgeon about the process. During this appointment, you will talk about health issues you have, questions you have about the surgery, the type of anesthesia you will be under, etc.
The next step will be the removal appointment. Make sure to have time to go to the appointment and afterward to rest after the surgery. Most wisdom tooth removal surgeries are under an hour. You will be put under anesthesia and the surgery will be completed. The doctors will remove the wisdom teeth and may need to cut the gums in order to get to the teeth. If this is the case, they will stitch up the wound. You will not feel any of these things, as you will be sedated.
After the procedure, you will need someone to take you home, as you will not be able to drive. Everyone has different reactions to anesthesia, so take it easy. Most of the time your mouth will have some pain and swelling for a few days after the surgery, and it will likely take a few weeks for your mouth to completely heal.
