VIP Smiles Dental Fillings
If your tooth is damaged by decay that is not extensive enough to warrant the use of an onlay or dental crown, the doctors here at VIP Smiles may recommend a basic restoration known as a filling. While crowns replace the entire tooth structure, dental fillings are designed to replace only the damaged portion of the tooth, keeping a larger portion of your original tooth intact. A More Comfortable Restoration Method
When a tooth is compromised by tooth decay or another type of damage, our dentists first remove the damaged part of the tooth structure. Our practice uses an advanced type of dental technology known as microdentistry, or air abrasion.
Many times, the amount of healthy tooth structure that is removed with air abrasion can average 1/20th that of a traditional filling, allowing the natural tooth to remain stronger. With microdentistry, we don’t have to use a drill, and we can remove the decay quickly and comfortably. Air abrasion can often remove the damaged portion of the tooth in just two to four minutes, while traditional methods can take up to 20 to 30 minutes for traditional fillings. In most cases, you will not need a numbing shot or injection.
The Process
After thoroughly sanitizing the tooth, we place the dental filling material and adjust the filling to match the shape, size, and color of the tooth. We also make certain that the filling fits your bite for a comfortable end product. Once the dental filling is in the ideal form, we harden or cure it with a special high-speed light.
A Natural-Looking Solution
At our dental office, we provide white tooth-colored dental fillings. These fillings are called resin or composite fillings and are made of a tooth-colored, mercury-free amalgam material known as composite resin. Our dentists can match the color of the resin to your natural tooth to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
