Types of Dental Emergencies
Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)
A knocked-out tooth is one of the most common dental emergencies. If your tooth has been knocked out, seek dental treatment immediately. When the tooth is removed from the mouth, blood vessels, tissues, and nerves are damaged. If the tooth can be placed within the socket within the hour, there is a chance it can be saved.
What Should I Do With a Knocked-Out Tooth?
A common dental emergency is when a tooth is knocked out during contact play. If your tooth is knocked out, here are the first steps to take:
- Call our office immediately, (385) 316-6386
- Gently pick up the tooth and place it under warm water without touching the root.
- Place the tooth back into its socket, or tuck it into the cheek pouch. Use gauze to hold it in place.
- If your tooth cannot be placed back in the socket, place it in a cup of milk as a last resort and bring it to our dental office in Syracuse, UT, to prevent it from drying out.
- Drive safely to our office at your appointment time and be treated by Dr. Shad Ingram or Dr. Rick Ingram.
It is our highest priority to restore the lost tooth. If we cannot restore the knocked-out tooth, we can discuss additional options so you won’t have a missing tooth in your smile!
Lost Dental Crown/ Lost Dental Filling
Are you missing a dental filling, or have you lost a dental crown? Dental fillings normally “fall out” when someone is eating. Once the filling is out of the tooth, it can become painful. Dental crowns can fall off when the tooth underneath has started to decay and can no longer support the crown due to tooth structure and gum recession changes.
If you have a missing crown or a missing filling, here are the steps you need to take;
- Call our office immediately, (385) 316-6386
- Place the crown into a container and bring it to the appointment. (You do not need to keep the missing filling material)
- Rinse the mouth with warm salt water to clean the area and reduce pain and swelling.
- Use an icepack against the cheek to reduce discomfort.
- Topical pain relievers can assist with pain management.
If you have a missing filling or missing crown, call our dental office in Syracuse, Utah, immediately to schedule an appointment (385) 316-6386.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
Are you dealing with a cracked or broken tooth? Fractures, cracks, and breaks are common and can be painless, but the tooth’s root is disrupted for many patients and will lead to extreme pain. Teeth grinding, biting on hard objects, and trauma are common reasons for cracked or broken teeth.
If you have cracked or broken teeth in Syracuse, West Point, Clearfield, and surrounding areas, here are the steps you need to take;
- Call our office immediately, (385) 316-6386
- Apply gauze to the area if any bleeding is occurring.
- Rinse the mouth with warm salt water to clean the area and reduce pain and swelling.
- Use an icepack against the cheek to reduce discomfort.
- Topical pain relievers can assist with pain management.
If you have a cracked or broken tooth, call our emergency dental office in Syracuse, Utah, immediately to schedule an appointment (385) 316-6386.
Dislodged or Loose Tooth
Trauma can cause a tooth to become dislodged or loose. Gum disease is another common culprit that causes a tooth to become loose. When a tooth becomes loose, contact our dental office as soon as possible so Dr. Shad Ingram or Dr. Rick Ingram can assess the damage and determine the best dental treatment available.
