3 Common Questions About White Fillings

Getting a dental filling is not something that all people experience. But many adults have experienced a cavity or two and have probably heard the options for fillings. But do you really know the difference and pros and cons of different fillings?

Once you have a cavity filled, it is unfortunately not one and done. Often fillings need to be re-done or more cavities may occur if your teeth are not taken care of properly.

Having white fillings used for your cavities can actually help them to last longer than other materials used for fillings. Patients often question just how long do they last with proper care? Here are some myths and common questions about white dental fillings.

What Is The Difference?

Silver fillings are strong and durable and can handle lots of wear and tear. These fillings can last anywhere from 10-15 years. The downside to these fillings is that they can be more visible on your teeth. There has also been some concern about the amount of mercury in the material.

White fillings are obviously tooth colored and are less noticeable in your overall smile. Using this filling also requires less drilling, which means you get to keep more of your healthy tooth. These fillings are also durable and can stand up to wear and tear. But they may not be the best long lasting options.

How Long Do They Last?

White dental fillings have always been considered to be less long lasting than silver fillings, but in recent years the materials have been proven to be really successful. These fillings have been said to last from 7-10 years, which is just slightly less than silver fillings. But the life of fillings will all depend on what is in your mouth and how hard you bite down on your teeth.

Since these fillings are seeming to prove durable in most patients, it may be worth it for the shorter life span. If taken care of properly, your fillings may last longer than others.

More About White Fillings

White fillings are made from a composite dental resin and as stated before, are more aesthetically pleasing because they match the color of your teeth. In more recent years, white fillings are the standard among most dental offices. Because they are more natural, more patients prefer them, and white is often safer than its silver counterpart.

About 50% of silver fillings contain mercury, which can cause some health problems in some patients. Composite materials do not contain mercury, which eliminates this risk in patients with white fillings.

What Happens When That Time Is Up?

While dental fillings last for a long time, they unfortunately don’t last forever. The filling protects your tooth from further decay, but once it falls out, that protection is lost. It is best to have regular dental checkups so that you can ask your dentist when your fillings need to be replaced.

If you have tooth sensitivity, sharp throbbing pain, or pressure when eating it may be a sign that your filling needs to be replaced. If you don’t have any pain, your dentist will be able to see if there is any weakness in your cavity fillings. If you have any concerns about cavities or fillings, your dentist will be able to recommend the best course of action.

Is your smile lacking any teeth or are you in line for a tooth extraction soon? Would you like to guarantee that your jaw will remain strong with a full smile for future use? Replace your lost or extracted teeth with reliable treatments such as dental implants.

Your oral health services guide for dental implants features the following attributes:

– Missing teeth should be corrected because otherwise, they can cause your jawbone to weaken and deteriorate over time.

– Dental implants are linked directly to your jawbone for a lasting hold that can withstand tough or hard foods.

– A full smile can make you look younger and help to enhance your self-esteem.

– Dental implants can be altered during the design phase and can mimic the natural look of your teeth.

– Dental implants fix the gaps left behind by lost or missing teeth for a full smile and strong dental profile.

– Leaving craters in your mouth where missing teeth once belonged can be dangerous for your oral health and can even destabilize your gums, causing nearby teeth to shift out of position.
