As most of you know, participating in a daily oral hygiene routine is an important step to achieving a successful oral health, but how do you know which products to use? Well, we are here to help you! Dentists today recommend using the following items to treat your oral cavity with love and care:

• Toothbrush: When looking for a toothbrush, take the bristle type into consideration. Generally, dental professionals strongly recommend the use of a soft-bristled toothbrush, especially if you have sensitive teeth and gums. This is a great choice for adults and children, and it effectively and successfully removes plaque and stains without damaging your teeth and gums. When it comes to using a manual or electric-powered toothbrush, your preference is all the matters. As long as your teeth are thoroughly cleaned, you can use either type of toothbrush.

• Toothpaste: When looking for the best brand and type of toothpaste to use, it is best to ask your dentist for suggestions, that way he or she can give you an answer based on your specific situation. Usually, dentists like to recommend fluoride toothpaste, which is a beneficial product that nourishes and strengthens your teeth. Also, when looking for toothpaste, look for toothpaste that has the American Dental Seal of Acceptance. This means that the product has been approved by the ADA and it is a safe and effective type of toothpaste.

• Mouthwash: When looking for a mouthwash, it is best to use a fluoride or bacteria-fighting product. Dentists recommend these types of mouthwashes because they not only freshen your breath, but they also nourish and strengthen your oral cavity. Also, alcohol-based mouthwash is not recommended for children under 6 years old because of the likely chance that they will swallow it.

While technology has changed many things in society, one thing that has stayed constant is the fact that many children get braces to help straighten their teeth. Today, 50-70 percent of children have braces, and adults are beginning to get braces too. No matter the age, teeth can always be straightened, and braces help do just that.

Below is some information to answer some of your questions about braces:

How much will braces cost?
The cost of braces often depends upon the treatment plan outlined by the Orthodontist. Shorter treatments cost less, and longer treatments cost more. Also, the type of braces the patient chooses will impact the cost. For example, invisible braces will cost more money than traditional metal ones.

What are the different types of braces?
• Traditional metal braces
• Self-litigating metal braces
• Clear/Ceramic braces
• Lingual braces

Do braces hurt?
A patient’s teeth are usually sore for a couple of days following the initial installation of the braces and after each subsequent monthly adjustment.

Less pain is felt now than in the past, however, as there are smaller and more efficient tools used to adjust the braces. With time, braces become less painful.

How do I remove food stuck in my braces?
One of the most effective methods of removing food from your braces is by using floss or a specialized braces toothbrush that has a small brush at the end to reach crevices and hard-to-reach areas.

What are the pros and cons of ceramic braces?
Ceramic braces are less visible than metal braces. The only perceived con is that they are more visible than invisible braces, now called Incognito, and Invisalign. Ceramic braces do not stain teeth.

Would you ever consider not brushing your teeth for days, weeks or months at a time? No way! If you were shocked by this question, we’ve got something even more alarming to ask you:

What would you say if we told you that failing to floss your teeth for days, weeks or months is not just equally as disastrous to your oral health as failing to brush, it’s actually worse! That’s right! If you could only brush your teeth or floss — one or the other but not both — then you should choose flossing.

Of course you should do both. The silly scenarios described above are meant to emphasize the crucial nature of flossing, in conjunction with brushing. Indeed, the American Dental Association and we, your friendly neighborhood dental office, want you to know that flossing once a day is an essential part of caring for your oral health.

But what if you’re an expert tooth-brusher? Isn’t brushing your teeth twice a day sufficient? No. While brushing is also very important, daily flossing enables you to remove plaque from between your teeth, those places where it’s impossible for toothbrushes to reach.

At this point, we hope that you’re convinced to floss daily. But you might wonder when you should floss. What time of day? Before or after brushing? It doesn’t really matter. You just need to be sure to floss once a day, every single day. If you’re always too tired to floss before bedtime, then floss in the morning or after lunch. Simply set a specific time every day where you can take a few minutes to literally improve your life.

But in case you’re wondering, some of the most serious tooth-lovers choose to floss every night before going to sleep. Why? Your salivary glands, which neutralize bacteria, slow their production during your slumber, because your brain knows you’re not eating while you’re sleeping. And many serious flossers prefer to floss then swish / rinse after brushing to get the food particles that still remain after brushing.

And remember, flossing should not be painful. If you are new to flossing, you may experience some discomfort and you might even see a small amount of bleeding from the gums initially, but stick with it and the discomfort should be gone within a week or two. If your pain continues, come to our office for a visit.

If people who floss love their teeth, then people who love their children should also floss their children’s teeth. Some people assume that children only need to brush, but as soon as you see two teeth touching in that little mouth, you should floss your children’s teeth. Children should be taught the techniques of flossing to promote good oral care habits, but just be aware that they are typically unable to floss well enough until about age 10, so you’ll need to “take turns” with them.
